5 signs that your cleaner is doing a good job

Having a good cleaner who leaves you with a clean and clear business is not only good for your colleagues’, your customers’ and your own health, but also for increasing workplace morale and productivity along with lowering rates of absenteeism.

It is therefore important for you to know if your current cleaner is doing a good job.

So, we have pulled together 5 signs that will help you to identify if your cleaner is up to scratch.

1. They stick to a schedule

Does your cleaner arrive on time, complete the work that is required of them within the agreed time period and then leave?

Or do they turn up late, quickly do the bare minimum and then leave?

Many cleaners work very early in the morning or late at night, so you may not be able to track if they are keeping to their schedule.

If this is the case, don’t worry, as we have more ways for you to check if your cleaner is doing a good job.

2. Your cleaning cupboard is clean and tidy

Having a clean and clear working environment not only improves your productivity but also reflects the quality and standard of your work.

Our TGC Dream Team take great pride in their cleaning cupboards, as they represent not only the level of service they provide to their customers but also our values as a TGC Family.

Therefore, a good place to start when checking if your cleaner is doing a good job is to check the cleanliness of your cleaning cupboard.

3. They are well equipped for the job

Having the right equipment and products is essential in completing any job effectively, so while you are looking in your cleaning cupboard have a look around to see if they have a variety of supplies.

Many cleaners will bring fresh products and equipment with them on the day, so be sure to observe them at work if you can to see if they are using the equipment and products that they should be.

Of course, you are not cleaning experts, but some warning signs are cleaners using one or two cloths to cover every area (from the toilet to your desk!) and using one all-purpose spray when they agreed to use different products for different surfaces.

4. Your workplace is clean

It sounds simple but sometimes surfaces can look cleaner than they actually are.

So, try taking a microfiber cloth or paper towel and wiping it across different surfaces to see how clean they are.

Look at the corner of your carpets and floors to see if your cleaner has taken the time to clean them properly.

Have they vacuumed under tables and chairs or just around them?

Is the inside of your microwave, fridge or dishwasher clean?

If the answer to all of the above is positive then great.

If not then it may be worth speaking with your cleaning company to find out what has happened (just make sure the areas you are enquiring about are included in your cleaning arrangement).

5. Safety comes first

Does your cleaner leave wet floor signs after cleaning your floors and are they careful when using equipment with wires to ensure they are not causing any hazards?

We treat all of our customers and their colleagues like they are family, which means their safety is our top priority.

If your cleaner is not committed to the safety of you and your colleagues, their commitment to cleaning could also be questioned.

Even if their standards are high, if they are not taking the safety of you and your colleagues seriously, then you should question if they are the right fit for your business.

What to do next

If you find any areas of your cleaning that you are not happy with then your next step should be to contact your cleaning company.

Having an open and honest conversation can work wonders, as it can clear up issues that either side were not aware off.

It can also help you to identify if you require cleaning services that you did not realise you required.

How to clean your desk in 4 easy steps

Keeping your desk clean is not only good for your health and happiness but also your productivity too.

But, let’s face it, with all the meetings and deadlines we need to meet it can be difficult to stay on top of it.

This is why we have pulled together 4 super easy tips that will keep your desk tidy, green and clean.

Recycle your rubbish

From meeting notes and reports to coffee cups, water bottles and snack packs, clutter can quickly build up around your desk.

Start by gathering everything that you don’t need (do you really need those notes from 12 months ago?) and then take it to your office recycling bins and separate it out.

Dust, dust, dust

Grab a microfibre cloth and give everything a dust from top to toe (yes, even under the computer monitor).

This will not only clear the air you breath but also prepare your surface for the next step.

Give it a tidy, green, clean

Take another microfibre cloth, along with an eco friendly cleaner (or make your own), and scrub down all surfaces, including your monitor, keyboard and mouse (as these are germ hotspots).

A clean sweep

Finish off your clean by giving the floor under and around your desk a quick sweep or hover.

This will remove all the dust and debris that has gathered on the floor since your last clean.

And relax!

Now your desk is tidy and clean you can take a few minutes to relax before cracking on with the day ahead within a happy and healthy working environment.

How to keep your break room clean and your workforce happy

A break room should be a place of comfort and relaxation, where your workforce can take a few minutes to gather their thoughts and recharge their batteries in order to continue with the day ahead.

Unfortunately, they often do more harm than good.

From food stained microwaves and mouldy fridges to coffee stained worktops and overflowing sinks, break rooms can quickly get out of hand.

In fact, nearly half of those surveyed identified people causing mess in the break room, and not cleaning it up, as the single most annoying and frustrating behaviour within the workplace.

This then causes your workers to return to their desks in a worse mood than when they entered, increasing levels of irritation and reducing productivity.

The major problem with any communal area in a workplace is that there is very little accountability, leading people to lower their standards and hold the opinion that someone else will clean it up.

This can then spiral out of control, as this behaviour could creep into other areas of their working day.

So, what can you do to prevent this from happening?

Read on to find out.

Let your workforce know

It sounds simple but letting your workforce know what is expected of them can make a huge difference.

Sometimes people are simply not aware of the impact their actions can have on other people or feel that there are no repercussions for their actions.

By letting your workforce know what will be changing and how they can play a part in making it a success, you will be able to begin addressing the problem.

Put up some signs

Once you have shared your plans with your workforce you need to reinforce it.

We are all busy and sometimes we can be so focused on what we are doing that we forget to do the things that are in front of us.

By placing some simple signs up around the break room you can gently remind your colleagues of what is expected of them.

Ask for help

In most offices, there is that one person who loves to keep things clean.

So, why not ask them if they would like to be in charge of keeping the break room clean, stressing how important it is to you.

Allocate them time every week and let their passion loose on the break room.

Not only will they feel honoured that you have assigned such an important task to them, your whole business will benefit from it.

Call the experts

Of course, you may not have anybody suitable within your business to look after your break room.

So, if all else fails, you should consider contacting a commercial cleaning company to keep both your break room and office tidy, green and clean.

There are, however, a number of things to consider when deciding on a commercial cleaning company.

Why is eco friendly cleaning the best?

Keeping your workplace clean is an essential part of any business and comes with a number of benefits, from keeping your workplace clean (obviously) to improving workforce morale and productivity.

But, by using an eco friendly cleaning service, you can take things to the next level, experiencing many more benefits for your business in the process.

So, here are a few reasons why eco friendly cleaning is the best.

Keeps your workforce safe

Have you ever looked at the back of a bottle, can or tub of domestic cleaner at home only to find labels that read ‘Warning’, ‘Toxic’ or ‘Flammable’?

Well, commercial cleaners are even stronger and more dangerous than those found in the home which, if spilled, can pose a danger to you and your workforce.

From chemical burns to skin and eye irritation, there can be many nasty side effects of coming into contact with traditional cleaners.

You do not have this problem with eco friendly cleaning agents however, as they have to meet strict guidelines in order to make them safe to use in the workplace, with many claiming that they are even safe enough to drink (although we would not recommend it).

Keeps your workforce healthy

Along with keeping your workforce safe, eco friendly cleaning also helps to keep your workforce healthy.

A clean office creates a healthy office, as there is less chance of germs and disease spreading among colleagues.

Additionally, using eco friendly cleaning agents means chemicals are not being absorbed into your skin or lungs, reducing symptoms like sore heads and coughing.

Improves air quality

Believe it or not but many workplaces (especially those with poor air circulation) have higher pollution rates inside than outside of their building.

This is caused by the chemical odours found in traditional cleaning agents remaining in the air for too long.

By using eco friendly cleaning agents, these nasty chemicals are replaced with natural essential oils, keeping your business smelling fresh and your air even fresher.

Saves you time and money

The safety of our TGC Dream Team is our number one priority and we are sure you feel the same way about your workforce.

However, along with keeping your workforce safe and healthy, eco friendly cleaning also saves you time and money.

This is because a healthier workforce creates a lower level of absenteeism, increasing your return on investment and allowing you and your team to focus on the things that matter the most to your business.

Helps the environment

Ultimately, using eco friendly cleaning is better for the environment as less chemicals and pollution are released into the air and less unrecyclable waste is produced.

If we all take little steps towards reducing the impact we have on the environment then we can help protect it for generations to come.

How to keep your customers with clean washrooms

Let’s face it, running a successful business is not easy!

With so many options to choose from, it is essential for you to not only retain your loyal customers but also ensure that new customers return time and time again.

But how do you do that?

Well, providing a fantastic customer experience along with products or services your customers want are a great place to start.

However, you probably haven’t given much thought to your customer washrooms.

I can’t recall how many times I have been in a shop, restaurant or visitor’s attraction, having a great time, until I needed to use the washroom!

From poor cleaning standards and general upkeep to the smell or wet patches on the floor, a poor washroom is a real turn off.

In fact, 88% of people who took part in an independent survey by Initial Washroom Hygiene stated that washroom cleanliness was an important factor when considering a return visit to a business.

So, ask yourself, are you flushing business down the toilet with your customer washrooms?

If the answer is yes then you probably want to know what you can do to fix it.

Well, hiring a cleaner is a great place to start.

However, washrooms are used regularly throughout the day so there are a number of things that still need to be done outside of their standard clean.

Create a schedule

One of the easiest things you can do is create a washroom schedule, where you ask your staff to conduct regular washroom inspections (unless you have a full-time cleaner/cleaners).

During these inspections, ask them to review the washroom and pick up any toilet roll or paper towels that may be lying around, wipe up any spills on the sinks, sweep the floor and report back to you if there are any major problems that need to be addressed.

This will allow you to be proactive, rather than responding to complaints by your customers.

Give your washroom a makeover

When was the last time you really paid attention to your customer washrooms?

Go and have a look and ask yourself the following:

  1. Would I use this washroom?
  2. Does it reflect my business?
  3. What can I do to change this?

It may be that a simple coat of paint is all it takes or some handy work to replace the broken hand towel dispenser or squint toilet roll holder.

You may also look at it and think that your washroom needs a complete overall.

If you can afford it, then great, get cracking.

If you can’t, all is not lost.

What can you do now that will maximise what you have until you can replace it? Why not seek the advice of your colleagues?

It is amazing the difference adding some colour and a nice air freshener can make to any washroom.

Ignore it

You can, of course, completely ignore your washrooms, but with 88% stating cleanliness was important when considering whether to return or not, it is a very high number to ignore.

Image of a gold trophy with the phrase 'And the award for best commercial cleaning company in Aberdeen goes to...' to the right. This image represents our blog 'WHo is the best commercial cleaning company in Aberdeen,

Who is the best commercial cleaning company in Aberdeen (or anywhere for that matter)?

Who is the best commercial cleaning company in Aberdeen I hear you ask?

Well, as this blog is being written by a commercial cleaning company who are based in Aberdeen, you would be right to think that the answer would be us.

But the reality is that the correct answer depends on you and what it is that you are looking for.

Is the quality of service you receive the most important factor or does value for money top your list?

Maybe you want a quick service or a range of services from one provider.

Deciding what it is you are looking for will help you to answer this question and therefore find the commercial cleaning company that is right for you.

Things to consider when deciding on a commercial cleaning company

There are a number of things to consider when deciding on a commercial cleaning company including:

  • Do they really understand commercial cleaning?
  • What do their customers think of their commercial cleaning services?
  • How do they treat their cleaners?
  • Do their values match yours?

Do they really understand commercial cleaning?

This may seem like a strange question. A commercial cleaning company obviously understands commercial cleaning!

Not necessarily.

Many companies view their commercial cleaning services as just that, a service. In fact, commercial cleaning has a widespread impact on your business.

The benefits of commercial cleaning services include:

  • Clean, clear and safe working environments
  • Increased morale and motivation
  • Increased productivity
  • Higher job satisfaction
  • Reduced absenteeism
  • Saves time and money

If a commercial cleaning company truly understands the impact its services has on its customers, then their cleaners usually do too, which means they are likely to offer you a better service.

You can find out more about the impact commercial cleaning services can have on your business by checking out our services pages or by reading more of our blogs including ‘From money to motivation… 5 great ways we can help your business grow’.

What do their customers think of their commercial cleaning services?

Who better to ask about the commercial cleaning services a company provides than the people who pay for them.

If a company is receiving great feedback from their customers then they should be shouting it from the rooftops on their website and social media accounts.

If you still need some clarification then why not contact the company who left the feedback and ask them directly.

You can read feedback from a number of our customers on our testimonials page.

How do they treat their cleaners?

As our co-founder Andrew Alleway put it “Our consistently first-class results come from our people, who are without question the most important part of our business.”

Without skilled cleaners who understand how important their role is, a commercial cleaning company has nothing.

And yet the cleaning industry is known for treating and paying its staff poorly.

It doesn’t make sense for the commercial cleaning business and it doesn’t make sense for you, as why would you want to pay for a service from unmotivated cleaners.

So, when you are looking for a commercial cleaning company, have a look on their website and social media accounts and ask yourself:

  • Are they a living wage employer?
  • Do they mention their cleaners and the role they play in their business?
  • Are there pictures of their cleaners?
  • Are there quotes from their cleaners and office staff?
  • Is this a company I want to work with?

You can read more about us and our TGC Dream Team here.

Do their values match yours?

Our values are at the heart of our business and are the foundation for every decision we make, and we would imagine yours are too.

It would therefore make sense to align yourself with businesses who have similar values to your own.

For example, following on from the last section we discussed, if you are a company who are known to value your staff and treat them well, would you want to use a company who does not?

The company may be within your price range, or offer the service you are looking for, but the damage to your brand by being associated to them could be much more significant.

You can read more about our values on our about page.

Who is the best commercial cleaning company in Aberdeen for you?

As you can see, there is no simple answer when it comes to who the best commercial cleaning company in Aberdeen is.

Perhaps the question should not be who is best commercial cleaning company in Aberdeen but rather who is the best commercial cleaning company for you?

We hope that the tips we have given you in this blog will help to make your decision easier and if there is anything we can help you with then please let us know, either by visiting our contact page or by contacting us on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.

How to make your spring clean tidy and green this year

It may not feel like it but spring is almost upon us.

Flowers are starting to appear once again, whilst birds sing in the trees, as we look forward to brighter, longer and hopefully warmer days!

And this can only mean one thing, the dreaded spring clean!

From deep cleaning your kitchen and office to tackling dirty floors, the list never seems to end!

But don’t worry, we have some top tips that will make your spring clean easier this year, for you and for the environment.

Let the fresh air in

The simple things can often make the biggest difference, so start by cracking open a few windows.

We spend the winter months trying to stay as warm as possible, keeping windows, doors, blinds and curtains shut, unless absolutely necessary.

This leads to the air being recirculated with a lack of fresh air getting in.

The fresh air will not only be good for your lungs, it will also give you a motivational boost to crack on with your spring clean.

Rags at the ready

No spring clean prep would be complete without plenty of rags to help you tackle the dirty work.

Forget about wipes and paper towels, not only will you be wasting your money, you will be clogging up landfill sites at the same time.

Take the opportunity to give your clothing wardrobe a spring clean and then cut up any items that cannot be donated to a charity shop and use them as cleaning rags.

When you are finished, simply pop them in the washing machine and they will be ready to use again.

Dust, dust, dust

Start at the very beginning, it’s a very good place to start. But where do I start I hear you say!

Always start any clean by dusting from top to bottom. This will help you to achieve a better clean as the dust from shelves and desks will fall onto the ground.

All-purpose cleaner

Who doesn’t like the sound of an all-purpose cleaner?

All-purpose cleaners help to make cleaning easier and there couldn’t be anything easier than vinegar.

Vinegar is a household cleaning essential and it will wipe the floor (get it!!) with most of your current household cleaners.

Cupboards and counter tops

Tackle cupboards and counter tops by using a combination of vinegar, baking soda and water.

Simply mix two parts vinegar, one part baking soda and four parts water and apply with a sponge before wiping away.

Smelly carpets

With all the activity that happens on a carpet it is no surprise that they can get a little smelly every now and then.

All you have to do is sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda over them, leave it to settle for a while (or even overnight) and then vacuum it up, taking the odors with it.

Dirty floors

With all the cold and wet weather, there is no avoiding dirt on your floors and it can be hard to stay on top of it.

Simply mix three tablespoons of vinegar with half a bucket of water and you are ready to tackle the dirt.

You can also add lemon or peppermint oil for a nice fresh scent.

Smudged windows

Windows never seem to stay clean for long.

Bring them back to life by mixing equal parts of vinegar and water and wiping all over with a dry and soft cleaning rag.

Lingering smells

If you still find, after all of your spring cleaning, that there are smells lingering in certain rooms, then we have the solution for you.

Place a shallow bowl two thirds full of vinegar in the room with the smell and within 24 hours it should be gone.

So, there you have it, some top eco friendly cleaning tips to make spring cleaning your home and office easier this year.

However, if you decide after cleaning your home that you want to call in the professionals to clean your office then give us a call on 01224 515 933.

Have fun!

Reduce absenteeism with a clean and clear workplace

Hands up who can afford to throw away £120,000?

Anybody? That’s what I thought, and yet this is what the average business does each and every year due to the cost of absenteeism.

Illness costs UK businesses an astonishing £16 billion every year and, when this is broken down to 6.5 days lost per employee, it’s clear the impact absenteeism has on each and every business is huge.

Now we realise that people become ill, but there are a number of ways that you can prevent absence through having a clean and clear workplace.

Most common causes of absence

From hangovers to lost shoes, there are a million and one reasons for workplace absenteeism, but the two most common are general illness (such as common colds and the flu) along with stress.

General illness

From desks, doorknobs and toilet seats to printers, phones and microwaves, each and every day we touch millions of germs at work.

This is because germs love to make homes in your office furniture and equipment, ready to pounce on their next victim.

And as long as these germs are living a comfortable life without being disturbed by your cleaning then they will continue to multiply and spread their germs throughout your office, creating the potential for an illness epidemic to wreak havoc on your business.

It is therefore no surprise that the cleanliness of your office and your general hygiene standards are directly linked to absenteeism.

Numerous studies have shown that by creating a tidy, clean, hygienic working environment employee absenteeism will significantly decrease.

This is because there will be less germs waiting to infect your employees resulting in a lower chance of catching an illness at work, making your workforce generally healthier.

When people think of stress in the workplace they usually think of workload, deadlines and erratic working environments, but a dirty, messy and chaotic office can be just as stressful.

A clean, clear and welcoming office is proven to not only make people more relaxed but, most importantly, improve their mood and overall happiness at work.

The happier your colleagues are at work the more productive they will be, so you need to ensure that your business is clean, clear and welcoming from the moment they walk in the door to the moment they walk out.

What you can do

Here are a few tips you can use to reduce germs:

  • Encourage colleagues to wash their hands (not just after the toilet)
  • Make hand sanitiser stations readily available (keep them topped up)
  • Create a cleaning rota (with colleague accountability, tasks and dates)
  • Encourage colleagues to clean up after they use a communal area
  • Offer all colleagues products to clean their desks (such as a microfiber cloth and an eco friendly cleaner)
  • Encourage colleagues to eat away from their desks (not only reducing germs but increasing exercise)
  • Wash mugs and glasses regularly with hot water
  • Discourage colleagues from coming to work sick (does your sickness policy help or hinder this?)

How we can help

From keeping your office, computers, communal areas, floors and carpets clean to ensuring your hand sanitisers, desk cleaners, hand soaps and toilet rolls remain topped up, we can ensure that you win your fight against the army of evil bacteria that are marching through your office, regardless of what they throw at you.

Please visit our services page to find out more about our commercial cleaning services and how they can help you reduce absenteeism.

You can also visit our cleaning tips and blogs sections to find out more simple ways you can keep both you and your colleagues safe and healthy at work.

Why we are proud to be a Living Wage employer (and why you should be too)

As a Living Wage employer, 2017 was a big year for Tidy Green Clean.

We launched, expanded and brought new franchisees into our TGC family, all earning the Living Wage or above.

This is because, along with being an eco friendly commercial cleaning company, we also believe in being socially responsible.

This is why we are proud to be a Living Wage employer.

Benefits of being a Living Wage employer

Research conducted on employers who have introduced the Living Wage shows a 25% fall in days of absence, 80% of employers see an increase in the quality of work of their staff and 66% reported improved recruitment and retention outcomes.

These are all benefits that we have experienced. But these aren’t the only reasons that Tidy Green Clean believe in being a Living Wage employer.

Independently conducted research with employees who work for a Living Wage employer shows that 75% of employees reported increases in work quality and that 50% felt that the Living Wage had made them more likely to adopt changes in working practices more quickly.

As we evolve and keep up-to-date with the latest green cleaning technologies, our employees are keen to adapt.

But perhaps more importantly, paying a Living Wage can afford our employees more time to spend with their friends and loved ones, and time to dedicate to their local community.

We see that as socially responsible and we are proud to play our part in benefiting society.

What do our TGC Dream Team think?

“TGC is a great company to work for. I have worked there for a year and I cannot imagine working anywhere else.”

“Not only do I enjoy my job but with two young children at home, receiving the Living Wage makes things easier for me and my family, especially at this time of year.”

“I am proud to work for a company who has its colleagues, customers and the world around them at the forefront of their thinking.”

As you can see from the quotes above our team not only enjoy working for us but appreciate the benefits we offer to them and the feeling is mutual.

Proud to have such a wonderful team

We are proud to have such a wonderful team as without them there would be no Tidy Green Clean.

Our employees should feel cared for, valued and feel confidence and security in having us as an employer.

We believe it is the right thing to do.

As a family owned business we believe our team are our family too.

Everyone, we believe, should have a positive work/life balance and we urge every business to join us.

Make 2018 special for you too
